Marina Stognieva

Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva

Marina Stognieva was born in the Luhansk region and studied at Starobilsk Gymnasium. She received her higher education at the Institute of Culture and Arts. In 2019, she continued her studies in Florence, Italy, at the Michelangelo Academy of Art. From 2014, the artist lived and worked in Kyiv. She is the author of more than 350 paintings. Marina works in a variety of techniques, using oil, acrylic, watercolour and other artistic materials.

During the wartime period of 2023–2024, she taught painting to children and adults at a library in the capital, held charity art classes for children whose parents were defending Ukraine, and curated an exhibition where their works were presented. The artist has been an active participant in Kyiv’s cultural life, taking part in exhibitions at the House of Artists, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Mytets Art Gallery. She has also been invited to participate in international exhibitions around the world. Since 2022, a permanent exhibition of her works has been on display at the Priorka Library in Kyiv.

She has received diplomas and certificates recognising her contribution to the development of Ukrainian art.

In November 2024, due to the escalation of hostilities in her homeland, she moved to the United Kingdom, where she continues her artistic practice and develops projects of importance to Ukrainian society.

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Stognieva has continuously reminded the world about the crimes committed by the aggressor state. In the photograph, Marina Stognieva is in France, at the Louvre, beside the portrait of the Mona Lisa, supporting the territorial integrity of Ukraine. In her hands is her watercolour painting “Luhansk Is Ukraine”.
