The Story Behind the Painting

“Village Hen” is an original painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in the spring of 2024. The work is painted in oil on canvas and measures 35 × 45 cm.

This painting became the starting point for Marina Stognieva’s series devoted to rural life. The inspiration came from the artist’s childhood memories of village life — a world where domestic animals, flowers, gardens, and everyday routines were a natural part of the surrounding landscape.

In the painting, a charming hen stands among grasses and flowers. An ordinary rural scene is transformed into a vivid painterly image in which colour, sunlight, and the feeling of living nature become central.

Warm tones of the hen’s plumage are combined with rich greens, pink and yellow flowers, and cooler blue accents. Free oil brushstrokes create a textured surface, making the plants and feathers feel lively rather than static, as though they are moving gently in the summer air.
