The Story Behind the Painting

“Yoga at Dawn” is an original painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2020 in Ukraine. The work is painted in oil on canvas and measures 30 × 30 cm.

The painting was inspired by morning practices in nature — those moments when the world is only beginning to wake, the surrounding space is filled with silence, and the first sunlight starts to transform the colours of the sky and landscape. At the centre of the composition, the artist places a dark silhouette of a person seated in a meditative pose.

The human figure appears almost entirely as a silhouette, without portrait features or individual details. This makes the image universal. Rather than seeing a particular person, the viewer can perceive the figure as a symbol of inner concentration, calm, and the search for balance.

The raised arms form a strong triangular shape above the head and direct the eye toward the luminous centre of the sky. The sun seems to hover directly above the figure, creating a visual connection between the person, the light, and the surrounding space.

Colour has a particularly important role in this work. Yellow, gold, orange, and pink tones of the dawn sky flow into red, violet, blue, and green waves across the landscape. The space is built not through precise representation of nature, but through the movement of colour and the emotional impression of early morning light.

The flowing bands of colour around the figure create a sense of continuous movement. They may suggest hills, water, or simply an imagined landscape changing together with the sky. Against this active environment, the still dark silhouette becomes the compositional centre — a point of calm within a vibrant field of colour.

The contrast between the almost black figure and the radiant sky intensifies the feeling of sunrise. The person appears to exist between the darkness of night and the light of a new day, in a brief transitional moment when the world is only beginning to regain its colour.

“Yoga at Dawn” is a painting about inner silence, concentration, and a moment of stillness before the beginning of a new day. It reflects the possibility of stepping away from external movement for a few minutes and becoming fully aware of one’s own presence in the surrounding space.

At the same time, the image of dawn gives the work a sense of renewal. A new day becomes a new beginning, while the meditative pose suggests a state of readiness to meet it calmly and consciously.

With its square format, vivid warm palette, and expressive silhouette, the painting can become a striking visual accent in an interior, especially in a space intended for rest, meditation, or yoga.
