The Story Behind the Painting

“Winter Robin” is an original painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2025. The work is painted in oil on 200 g/m² paper, measures 15 × 20 cm, and is presented unframed.

At the centre of the composition is a small robin perched on a thin branch. Its rounded body occupies most of the central area of the paper, while a generous amount of white space surrounds it. The robin’s warm orange-red breast is the strongest visual accent in the work. It stands out clearly against the white background and combines orange, ochre, red, pink, and brown tones applied in thick, textured brushstrokes.

Marina Stognieva does not aim for photographic precision. The bird is painted freely and expressively: individual brushstrokes remain visible, some contours soften into the surrounding space, and the texture of the paint becomes part of the image itself. This freedom gives the small robin a sense of character and life.

Its gaze is directed straight toward the viewer. The dark eyes, short beak, and slightly tilted head create an impression of alertness and gentle curiosity. The robin seems to have paused for a moment on the branch, quietly observing the world around it.
