"Christmas Carols" is one of the most memorable creative works of the winter series by the artist Marina Stognieva.
Few people are left indifferent by the sincerity of this picture. According to a long-standing Ukrainian tradition, Caroling is a Slavic rite, when smartly dressed children, and sometimes adults, walk down the street, entering every house and singing “benevolent” songs to the owners, for which they receive treats.
As a child, the artist herself was a member of this vibrant tradition many times. Here is what she recalls about these events: "The winters were harsh, all the children dressed very warmly, always warm socks and boots. They painted their cheeks red, tied their heads with scarves, who had animal masks .. goats, foxes, they also took them. They went out to carol at 5 pm, returned no earlier than ten We, the yurba of children, about 8 people, wandered along the snow-covered streets, slowly, almost drowning in snowdrifts, entered every courtyard, and everywhere they were expecting us. We sang songs and unrolled our bags, the owners poured cookies, sweets, pies there. I met some of the relatives there, they were sure to give money. All the kids squealed with joy, bragged about their treats. On the way, we met numerous groups of the same carollers, stopped with some, shared their impressions, and gave tips on especially generous hosts.
