The Story Behind the Painting

“Paris for Two” is an original oil painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2020. The artwork is painted in oils on canvas, measures 70 × 80 cm, and is presented unframed.

In this painting, Paris appears not only as a recognisable city crowned by the Eiffel Tower, but above all as a setting for a personal story. A couple sits together on the bank of the Seine, looking towards the city. Their figures are turned away from the viewer, making us feel almost like accidental witnesses to a quiet moment that belongs only to the two of them.

The wide expanse of blue sky and water creates a feeling of lightness and tranquillity. The Eiffel Tower dominates the composition, yet the emotional centre of the work remains the couple in the foreground. A basket of flowers beside them adds intimacy and a gentle romantic note to the scene.

The painting was created in the artist’s studio in Kyiv in 2020. During the process, a balance gradually emerged between the scale of the city and the quiet presence of two people — between one of the world’s most famous landmarks and a small intimate moment beside the river.
