The Story Behind the Painting

“Asters” is an original painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in September 2019. The work is painted in oil on canvas and measures 35 × 45 cm.

Asters are among the artist’s favourite autumn flowers. In this painting, Marina Stognieva captures them at the height of their bloom, when rich pink, violet, blue, and lilac tones create a feeling of abundance and the full maturity of the autumn season.

The composition is built around a generous bouquet that almost completely fills the upper part of the canvas. Flowers of different sizes and shades overlap one another, creating a complex rhythm and a sense of natural fullness.

Colour plays a central role in the work. Cool blue and violet asters are combined with warm pink, lilac, yellow, and cream accents. Against the darker background, the blossoms appear even more luminous, while the bright green vase becomes a fresh colour centre within the composition.

Marina Stognieva works with free, textured brushstrokes rather than aiming for botanical precision. The petals are suggested through quick movements of the brush, giving the flowers a lively, expressive quality and a sense of movement.
