The Story Behind the Painting
“Titmouse” is an original watercolor painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in the autumn of 2023. The work is painted with watercolor on 300 g/m² paper, measures 24 × 31 cm, and is presented unframed.
At the centre of the composition is a small tit perched on a slender branch. Its dark head and vivid yellow plumage stand out against soft watercolor washes in warm autumn tones.

Marina Stognieva often turns to nature as a source of everyday observation. Birds, trees, branches, changing light, and seasonal colour become small subjects from which intimate works on paper and canvas emerge.
The freely painted background plays an important role in this watercolor. Large transparent washes of yellow, ochre, beige, and brown do not describe a specific place literally, but instead create the feeling of autumn air, leaves, and diffused light.
The fine lines of the branches contrast with the softness of the watercolor washes, while the bird becomes the main colour and emotional focus of the composition. The work combines the lightness of the medium with careful observation of a small living subject.

In the autumn of 2023, “Titmouse” took part in Marina Stognieva’s personal exhibition in a Kyiv forest. The exhibition was organised by the artist during the full-scale war, in a natural setting where the artworks interacted directly with trees, autumn light, and the surrounding landscape.

In this setting, the image of the small bird gained another layer of meaning: a watercolor born from observing nature was physically returned to a natural environment. This strengthens the sense of fragility, freedom, and the quiet presence of life that continues even in difficult times.
