The Story Behind the Painting

"City Fountains. Evening" is an original oil painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2024 on paper. The artwork is part of the artist's long-term project "Picturesque Guide to Ukraine" and is dedicated to the Vinnytsia Region. In this painting, the artist captures one of Vinnytsia's most recognisable evening landmarks—its illuminated city fountains, where water, light, and movement merge into a constantly changing spectacle.

The composition is dominated by soaring streams of water that rise into the evening sky and curve gracefully across the scene. They resemble transparent sculptures that transform every second, while the dark background enhances their luminous character. Reflections shimmering across the water create additional depth and reinforce the magical atmosphere of the evening.

The colour palette is built around deep blacks, graphite greys, cool blues, and soft silver tones, enriched by delicate pink, turquoise, and pearlescent highlights. These subtle accents make the water appear illuminated from within, filling the composition with movement, light, and quiet energy.

Marina Stognieva paints with expressive, energetic brushstrokes rather than precise realism. Vertical lines emphasise the strength of the fountains, sweeping curves create rhythm and flow, while textured layers in the foreground evoke rippling water filled with colourful reflections. Every brushstroke contributes to the sensation of constant motion.

Although the palette is predominantly dark, the painting conveys neither heaviness nor melancholy. Instead, glowing fountains and shimmering reflections create an atmosphere of celebration, expectation, and evening tranquillity. It portrays the city at the moment when familiar streets transform into a theatre of light and water.
