The Story Behind the Painting

"Cypresses" is an original acrylic painting on canvas by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva. Created in 2024, the artwork forms part of the author's cultural project "Picturesque Guide to Ukraine", an artistic journey through the landscapes, history, architecture and cultural heritage of every region of Ukraine. This painting belongs to the Crimea chapter of the project.

Few landscapes are as instantly recognisable as those of Crimea. Tall cypress trees rising towards the sky, winding garden paths, warm southern light and rich Mediterranean vegetation create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Ukraine. Inspired by these landscapes, Marina Stognieva sought to capture not only their appearance but also their peaceful and timeless spirit.

A sunlit pathway gently leads the viewer through the composition into a quiet Crimean garden. Elegant cypresses stand like natural guardians, while the broad crowns of southern trees soften the landscape with their organic forms. Together they create a harmonious balance between strength and tranquillity.

Painted with expressive acrylic brushstrokes, the artwork celebrates colour and light rather than photographic realism. Vibrant greens, warm earth tones and touches of blue evoke the feeling of a bright summer day when the air is filled with the scent of trees, flowers and sun-warmed ground.

Throughout history, cypress trees have symbolised dignity, endurance and continuity. In Crimea they have become one of the peninsula's most recognisable natural landmarks, growing beside historic palaces, parks, gardens and architectural monuments. In this painting they become a symbol of the region itself and its unique character.
