The Story Behind the Painting
"Kara-Dag – Golden Gate" is an original oil painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva. Created in 2020, the artwork became part of the author's cultural and artistic project "Picturesque Guide to Ukraine", a collection of paintings introducing viewers to the landscapes, history, culture, traditions and unique atmosphere of different regions of Ukraine. This artwork belongs to the section dedicated to Crimea.

This painting captures the dramatic beauty of the south-eastern coast of Crimea. At the centre of the composition stands the famous Golden Gate, a spectacular natural sea arch rising from the Black Sea beside the ancient Kara-Dag volcanic massif. For centuries this remarkable rock formation has inspired artists, travellers and countless local legends.
Rather than creating a documentary landscape, Marina Stognieva presents an emotional vision of the place. The dark silhouettes of volcanic cliffs contrast with the glowing evening sky, where warm shades of gold, copper, orange and violet merge together. The last rays of sunlight pass through the arch and reflect across the calm sea, transforming the landscape into a scene filled with light and quiet contemplation.
Expressive oil brushstrokes give the painting its vibrant texture. The shimmering surface of the water, the rugged volcanic rocks and the changing colours of the sunset remain alive within every layer of paint.
