The Story Behind the Painting

“Donbas Arena. Donetsk” is an original painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2025. The work is painted in oil on canvas, measures 21 × 30 cm, and belongs to the artist’s large-scale project “Picturesque Guide to Ukraine”, an artistic journey through the regions of Ukraine, their history, atmosphere, architecture, people, and the artist’s personal perception of each place.

This painting is dedicated to the Donetsk region of Ukraine and to one of its most recognisable architectural landmarks — Donbas Arena in Donetsk. Marina Stognieva does not aim to reproduce the building as a documentary image. Instead, she explores how a familiar place can change in meaning through time, history, distance, and personal memory.

General view of the painting “Donbas Arena. Donetsk”. Oil on canvas, 21 × 30 cm, 2025.

In the painting, the stadium appears distant and almost unreal. Its smooth oval form seems to hover in space and, in the artist’s imagination, resembles an alien spacecraft that has landed in the wrong time and the wrong place. Once associated with modernity, movement, major sporting events, and the openness of the city, the building now carries a very different emotional meaning.

The structure is separated from the viewer by space and a thin veil of cold air. Blue, grey, and milky-white brushstrokes create a feeling of silence and suspended time. The architecture seems to exist on its own — familiar yet distant, real yet almost fantastical.

A particularly important role in the composition belongs to the rose branches in the foreground. They are almost bare, as if caught by frost. Their dark lines cross the surface of the painting and create a sense of fragility, interruption, and loss.

Yet among these branches, small pink buds and delicate blossoms begin to appear. They become one of the central symbols of the work. Life has not disappeared completely, even within a cold and seemingly desolate space. It remains in small signs — in colour, in memory, and in nature’s ability to bloom again.

The contrast between the large modern structure in the background and the fragile roses in the foreground creates the emotional tension of the painting. The architecture suggests the scale of human plans, ambition, and time, while the delicate living branches remind us that renewal often begins with something almost imperceptible.

At the time this painting was created in 2025, Donetsk was under Russian occupation. For the artist, this historical reality changes the way the familiar architectural image is perceived. Donbas Arena becomes more than part of an urban landscape — it becomes a symbol of the region’s complex history, the memory of a city, and the feeling of a place caught in suspended time.

At the same time, the painting does not remain only within the space of loss. The pink buds among the cold branches introduce another note — hope for renewal, for the return of light, life, and harmony to a place where they have been disrupted.

“Donbas Arena. Donetsk” is more than an architectural cityscape. It is a symbolic story about a place that continues to exist in memory, about the fragility of history, and about life that can begin to grow again even after a long winter.

Within the large-scale project “Picturesque Guide to Ukraine”, this painting adds another layer to the artistic portrait of the Donetsk region. Alongside its industrial history, people, and cityscapes, the project also preserves the memory of architecture that became part of the life of an entire generation.
