The Story Behind the Painting

“Sunset in Tuscany” is an original painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2020. The work is painted in oil on canvas, measures 20 × 25 cm, and is presented in a frame.

The painting was inspired by the artist’s travels through Italy and the evening landscapes of Tuscany. Marina Stognieva observed how the sun slowly disappeared behind the rolling hills while the sky shifted from warm gold to pink, lilac, and cooler blue tones.

The composition is built around the gentle movement of the Tuscan landscape. A road or pale path leads the viewer’s eye into the distance, curving around the hills and gradually disappearing from view. This gives the small-format painting a strong sense of space and depth.

In the foreground, a tree with a dark, curved trunk and spreading branches forms a strong compositional accent. It frames the landscape and opens the view toward the valley. Its expressive silhouette contrasts with the softer lines of the hills and the delicate transitions of the evening sky.

Colour plays a central role in the work. Pink, peach, gold, and lilac tones in the sky are balanced by cooler blues, greens, and greyish shades across the land. Small flashes of bright yellow suggest the last sunlight touching the landscape before evening fully arrives.

The detail reveals the textured character of the painting. Marina Stognieva works with short, free brushstrokes, leaving some areas of the canvas almost sketch-like.
