The Story Behind the Painting
"Gypsies in the Field" is an original oil painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2019. This large figurative composition celebrates freedom, music, cultural traditions and the beauty of life lived close to nature. Through expressive colours and warm evening light, the artist tells a timeless story about people whose spirit remains free wherever the road may lead.
Marina Stognieva spent her childhood in a village in eastern Ukraine, where people of different cultures and backgrounds lived side by side. Memories of endless fields, country roads, horses, folk music and colourful traditional clothing became an important source of inspiration for this painting. Rather than creating a documentary scene, the artist presents an emotional image filled with warmth, respect and admiration for cultural diversity.

"Gypsies in the Field." Oil on canvas. 120 × 100 cm. Overall view of the painting.
At the centre of the composition, a rider carrying a guitar slowly approaches along a country road. His presence fills the landscape with an invisible melody, as if music is flowing through the open fields together with the warm evening breeze. The horse moves calmly and confidently, becoming a symbol of freedom, movement and the enduring connection between people and nature.
Walking beside him are three women dressed in colourful flowing skirts decorated with floral patterns. Their vibrant garments create a joyful harmony of blue, gold, white, red and violet tones. Each figure has her own personality, yet together they form a unified image of friendship, family and shared traditions passed down through generations.

The surrounding landscape plays an equally important role. Endless green fields, a winding country road and the glowing orange sky evoke the peaceful atmosphere of a summer evening. The open horizon becomes a metaphor for an endless journey, reminding the viewer that true freedom is found not in a destination, but in the path itself.
Painted with expressive oil brushstrokes, the artwork combines decorative richness with emotional storytelling. The warm palette and dynamic composition invite the viewer to step into the scene and experience its atmosphere of music, movement and quiet happiness.

Measuring 120 × 100 cm, the painting has a strong visual presence and becomes a striking focal point in both contemporary and classic interiors. Its rich colours and narrative composition encourage the viewer to return to the canvas again and again, discovering new details with every glance.
"Gypsies in the Field" is a celebration of cultural identity, music, human dignity and the universal desire for freedom. Through this work, Marina Stognieva reminds us that traditions, kindness and the open road continue to unite people beyond borders and generations.
