The Story Behind the Painting

“Millennium in Ukrainian Style” is an original painting by Marina Stognieva, created in 2025. The work is painted in oils on paper and measures 21 × 30 cm.

This painting is a warm visual memory of a Ukrainian family celebration at the turn of the century. A large family gathers around a festive table where New Year and Christmas, family customs and old folk traditions all meet in one evening.

At the centre of the composition is a long table filled with traditional dishes, drinks and festive food. The guests sit close together, talking, listening and looking at one another. The artist does not show a formal celebration, but a living domestic atmosphere — full of warmth, noise, closeness and the feeling of a large family gathered together.

The window is an important part of the story. Outside are Christmas carollers carrying a traditional star. They connect the intimate interior with an older Ukrainian tradition and recall carolling, winter celebrations and customs passed down from one generation to the next.

The Christmas tree, red curtains, festive table and gathered figures create a rich, almost theatrical space. Yet behind the decorative scene lies something simple and deeply personal — the memory of a time when the whole family came together and the beginning of a new millennium felt like a special threshold between the past and the future.

The painterly manner remains lively and direct. The artist does not aim for photographic precision — faces, dishes, clothing and interior details are conveyed through character, colour and rhythm. As a result, the scene feels less like a posed family portrait and more like a memory preserved together with voices, aromas and the emotional warmth of the celebration.
