The Story Behind the Painting

“Country House and Garden” is an original acrylic painting on canvas by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2022. The painting depicts a real country house near Kyiv — a place associated with warm gatherings of artists, shared lunches, tea, long conversations, and painting surrounded by nature.

Marina returned to Kyiv after several months of forced evacuation to Europe caused by the beginning of the full-scale war. After returning, familiar places began to feel completely different. Things that had once seemed ordinary — an old wooden house, a garden, trees, flowers near the porch — acquired a new value as images of home, tranquillity, and peaceful everyday life.

The house almost disappears into the greenery. It is surrounded by tall trees, dense shrubs, grass, and garden flowers. The artist does not strive for photographic precision — what interests her is the feeling of the place itself: the cool shade beneath the trees, the scent of plants, the quiet of the garden, and that particular sense of comfort found away from the noise of the city.

Green becomes the main character of the painting. It appears in dozens of shades — from the light green of young grass to the deep, dark shadows of evergreen trees. Free, energetic brushstrokes convey the movement of foliage and create the impression of living nature continuing to grow beyond the edges of the canvas.

At the centre of this green space stands a simple wooden country house. It is neither grand nor idealised — and that is precisely where its charm lies. Weathered boards, a small porch, flowerpots, and garden plants create the image of a real dacha where life is made up of simple things: morning coffee, long conversations, time spent in the garden, and meetings with people close to you.

After the experience of evacuation, an ordinary Ukrainian country house surrounded by a garden began to feel like a symbol of everything worth preserving: one’s home, familiar landscapes, the possibility of meeting friends, painting, growing flowers, and simply spending a peaceful day in nature.

“Country House and Garden” is more than a landscape. It is a painting about the memory of a place, the feeling of home, and the beauty of everyday life. There are no monumental symbols here. Instead, there are the simple things from which a personal sense of homeland is often formed — a familiar house, trees, a garden, flowers, and people connected with important memories.
