The Story Behind the Painting

“Autumn in the English Countryside” is an original work by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in England in 2026. The painting is made in oils on 300 g/m² paper and measures 21 × 30 cm.

A small old house surrounded by trees, a narrow road curving around the green lawn, and autumn leaves gradually changing colour — this work brings together a very characteristic image of the English countryside. There is nothing grand or staged here: it is a quiet corner of everyday England seen through the artist’s eyes.

The pale stone house almost disappears among the dense greenery. Autumn is only beginning to touch the trees — beside the green foliage, golden, orange, and red tones start to appear. It is this transition between summer and autumn that gives the landscape its particular sense of life.

The painting is handled freely and energetically. Short brushstrokes shape the foliage, grass, stone walls, and road without overloading the composition with detail. This allows the landscape to retain the feeling of an immediate impression — as though the scene had been noticed during a walk and transferred directly into paint.

The contrast between the cool grey-blue tones of the road and sky and the warmer colours of the autumn trees is especially expressive. The old house becomes the quiet centre of the composition, while the curve of the road leads the eye towards it through the garden.
