The Story Behind the Painting

“Colorful Trees” is an original watercolor painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2023. The work is painted with watercolor on 300 g/m² paper, measures 24 × 31 cm, and is presented unframed.

In this work, the artist captures not a specific landscape, but the feeling of autumn itself — that brief moment when the trees seem to ignite with colour. Green, red, pink, orange, and ochre washes flow into one another, creating a lively and almost weightless canopy.

The composition is built on the contrast between two distinct characters: the darker green tree on the left and the brighter, more intense crown on the right. A slimmer tree appears between them, visually connecting the two masses of colour and giving the composition rhythm.

Watercolor is used freely here, without excessive detail. The paint spreads, merges, leaves transparent edges, and forms saturated accents. This looseness helps convey the fleeting character of autumn foliage — colours that exist only for a short time before disappearing.

In the details, the transparency of the watercolor becomes especially visible, as separate areas of colour form the image of the trees without hard outlines. This makes the landscape feel emotional and light — more like a memory of an autumn day than a literal depiction of a place.

In the autumn of 2023, “Colorful Trees” took part in Marina Stognieva’s personal exhibition in a Kyiv forest. The artist organised the exhibition during the full-scale war, placing the artworks directly among the trees, where art became part of the natural environment that had inspired it.

For “Colorful Trees”, this form of display was especially natural: a watercolor of autumn trees was shown literally among an autumn forest. The artwork and the real landscape existed side by side, almost continuing one another.
