The Story Behind the Painting

“Breath of Autumn. November” is an original painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2024. The work is painted in oils on canvas, measures 75 × 95 cm, and is presented unframed on a gallery-wrapped canvas.

This painting captures one of the most expressive moments of late autumn — a time when the crowns of the trees still hold warm orange, golden, terracotta, and soft pink tones, while nature is already gradually moving towards the quieter mood of November.

The painting is built freely and emotionally. Rather than describing every individual leaf, the artist uses areas of colour, the texture of oil paint, and energetic brushwork to create the impression of living tree crowns stirred by the autumn wind.

The title can almost be felt in this movement: a light breath passes through the trees, touches the branches, and lifts the yellowing leaves into the air. They seem to circle for a moment, turning the autumn landscape from a static scene into an image of constant change.

The painting was created in Marina Stognieva’s art studio in Kyiv in 2024. A small and very personal story became part of the memory surrounding this work.

The artist rescued a small wild bird, and the bird became so fascinated by this painting that it would repeatedly return to it and sit beside it for long periods of time. It almost seemed to have chosen the painting for itself — like a tiny, devoted admirer of art.

In this work, autumn appears not simply as a colourful season, but as a state of movement between warmth and coolness, colour and gradual stillness. That brief moment of transition — when the foliage is still glowing, yet November is already changing the landscape — became the central mood of the painting.
