The Story Behind the Painting

“Luxembourg Garden. Walks Through Paris” is an original watercolor by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2020 during her art travels in France. The work is painted on 300 g/m² French paper and measures 24 × 32 cm.

The painting captures one of those Parisian scenes where almost nothing seems to be happening, yet the atmosphere of the city can be felt especially strongly. An autumn avenue in the Luxembourg Garden stretches into the distance beneath golden and ochre trees, while an empty green chair in the foreground seems to invite the viewer to stop for a moment and simply enjoy the quiet.

These green metal chairs have long become part of the visual character of Parisian gardens. In this composition, one of them becomes almost a central character. It stands empty, yet a human presence can still be felt — as though someone had just risen from the chair and continued walking along the avenue.

The artist combines the transparency of watercolor with free graphic lines. The tree trunks and shadows along the avenue are painted more boldly, while the foliage dissolves into small touches of green, gold, terracotta, pink, and brown.

Light filtering through the trees creates an almost abstract rhythm of light and shadow across the pathway. Because of this, the watercolor conveys not simply the appearance of a particular place, but the personal feeling of walking through it — slowly, quietly, and with a touch of contemplation.

The work belongs to the “Walks Through Paris” series, in which Marina Stognieva preserves her own impressions of the French capital — not only its famous landmarks, but also its quiet gardens, avenues, changing light, autumn leaves, and small moments of everyday life.
