The Story Behind the Painting

“Cherry Trees Bloom in Uzhhorod” is an original work by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2026. The painting is made in oil on 300 g/m² paper, measures 21 × 30 cm, and is presented unframed.

In this work, Marina Stognieva captures springtime Uzhhorod through one of its most delicate visual symbols — blossoming trees. Pink crowns fill much of the upper part of the composition, forming a vivid arch above the path that leads deeper into the city space. The painting is built around a feeling of warm light, quiet movement, and that brief moment when spring transforms an ordinary street into an almost dreamlike place.

Colour plays the leading role in this painting. Rich pink, raspberry, and lilac tones of the blossoms are combined with fresh greens, warm shades of the pathway, and soft light areas of architecture. As a result, Uzhhorod appears not as a documentary cityscape, but as an emotional impression of spring.

The path stretching from the foreground into the distance creates a sense of invitation, as if the viewer could step into the painting and walk beneath the flowering crowns. Free brushwork and varied textures strengthen the feeling of living nature, light, and air.

During the painting process, the artist built the composition through large areas of colour: the pink cloud of blossom, dark vertical tree trunks, fresh greenery, and the warm perspective of the pathway. The details remain secondary to the overall atmosphere, allowing the spring mood of the city to remain the main impression.

“Cherry Trees Bloom in Uzhhorod” is part of Marina Stognieva’s large-scale author project “Picturesque Guide to Ukraine” and was created for the section dedicated to Zakarpattia. Through this project, the artist explores the character of Ukraine’s regions through painting — their cities, landscapes, architecture, traditions, and personal impressions.

In this work, Uzhhorod is remembered through spring blossom, colour, and the feeling of walking through the city. The pink flowering crowns become more than a detail of the landscape — they form the central emotional image of a brief, bright, and intensely alive moment of spring.
