The Story Behind the Painting

“English Autumn. Old Castle” is an original work by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in England in 2026. The painting is made in oils on 300 g/m² paper and measures 21 × 30 cm.

An old English castle appears behind a lace-like network of almost bare autumn branches. Architecture and nature are not separated here: the tree trunk, thin dark branches, the last remaining leaves, and the pale walls of the old building merge into one living composition.

There is nothing ceremonial about this view of the castle. Instead, the painting reveals another side of England — quiet, restrained, and observed during an ordinary autumn walk. Old architecture emerges through the trees, warm fallen leaves lie underfoot, and the cool pale sky emphasises the season’s transition.

Loose brushwork and the visible texture of oil paint preserve a sense of immediacy. Some details are only suggested, while the dark lines of the branches cross the pale silhouette of the castle as if the artist had captured the very first impression of the scene.

Warm red, ochre, and brown tones of the ground contrast with the cooler grey and blue tones of the sky and architecture. This gives the small-format work a surprising sense of depth, air, and distinctly autumnal atmosphere.
