The Story Behind the Painting

"City Fountains. Night" is an original oil painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2024 on paper. The artwork is part of the author's long-term art project "Picturesque Guide to Ukraine" and is dedicated to the Vinnytsia Region. In this painting, the artist captures the magical atmosphere of Vinnytsia's fountains after dark, when water, light, and silence merge into a poetic urban landscape.

Against a deep black background, tall illuminated streams of water rise into the night sky. They resemble glowing towers or abstract silhouettes of a city transformed by light. Golden, crimson, orange, silver, blue, and green reflections travel through the fountains, creating the impression that the water itself radiates light.

The composition is built on the powerful contrast between darkness and light. The almost black background intensifies every colourful brushstroke, allowing the illuminated fountains to become the emotional centre of the painting. Instead of describing architecture, the artist focuses on movement, rhythm, and atmosphere.

Expressive vertical brushstrokes convey the height and energy of the water jets. Thick layers of oil paint create texture and depth, while the irregular colourful lines give the composition spontaneity and life. The fountains seem to be constantly changing, as if captured in a fleeting moment.

Near the bottom of the painting, shimmering reflections dissolve across the dark surface of the water. Red, blue, gold, and green accents create an elegant rhythm of reflections that balances the vertical movement above and brings harmony to the composition.

Unlike the painting "City Fountains. Evening", this artwork explores the deeper hours of the night, when the surrounding city almost disappears and only light and water remain visible. The result is a more abstract, mysterious, and emotionally intense interpretation of one of Vinnytsia's best-known landmarks.

As part of the "Picturesque Guide to Ukraine" project, this painting represents the Vinnytsia Region through one of its contemporary symbols. Rather than documenting the place realistically, it preserves the emotional memory of the city through colour, light, and expressive brushwork.
