The Story Behind the Painting

“Fisherman’s House” is an original work by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2026 as part of the large-scale author project “Picturesque Guide to Ukraine”. The painting is made in oil on 300 g/m² paper and measures 21 × 30 cm.

The work is dedicated to the Zhytomyr region. At the centre of the composition is a long wooden bridge leading the viewer’s eye deep into the painting towards a house surrounded by nature. This strong perspective becomes the main structural element of the composition and creates a clear sense of movement forward.

The bridge occupies almost the entire lower part of the work and narrows towards the horizon. Its railings form strong diagonal lines that visually guide the viewer through the space of the painting. Because of this, the landscape feels less like a static view and more like a path — as if a few more steps could take the viewer directly into the scene.

The colour structure is based on a complex balance of warm and cool tones. Cooler blues appear on the left, while the right side is filled with gold, ochre, orange, and pink. This transition creates the impression of changing light and gives the scene a distinctive late-day atmosphere.

The house in the distance is not painted with literal precision. Instead, it seems to emerge from a dense movement of green, brown, golden, and pink brushstrokes. Architecture and vegetation gradually merge into a single painterly mass.

Marina Stognieva works with free, energetic brushstrokes. In the central area they become denser and more textured, while the sky and the space around the bridge are painted more broadly and calmly. This contrast strengthens the sense of depth and draws attention towards the destination at the end of the path.

In the sky, cool blue gradually shifts into warm light. Pink, peach, and golden tones create a soft glow that is echoed in the lower part of the composition. As a result, the entire painting seems to be united by one changing light.

A distinctive feature of this work is the feeling of a journey towards a hidden place. The house is not presented as a separate architectural object: the viewer must visually travel towards it along the bridge, and this movement becomes part of the experience of the painting itself.

“Fisherman’s House” is part of “Picturesque Guide to Ukraine”, Marina Stognieva’s large-scale author project in which different regions of Ukraine are explored through painting, nature, architecture, travel, and the artist’s personal observations.

In this work, the image of the Zhytomyr region is shaped through the atmosphere of the place: the long bridge, the water, evening light, greenery, and the house in the distance. Together they create not simply a landscape, but the feeling of a journey towards a quiet, almost hidden corner.

“In this work, the path itself was important to me — the long bridge leading forward towards the house surrounded by nature. I wanted to capture the feeling of evening light, space, and the quiet presence of a place that seems to invite you to walk just a little further.”
— Marina Stognieva
