The Story Behind the Painting
“Radomysl Castle” is an original work by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2026 as part of the large-scale author project “Picturesque Guide to Ukraine”. The painting is made in oil on 300 g/m² paper and measures 21 × 30 cm.
The work is dedicated to the Zhytomyr region and to one of its distinctive architectural landmarks — Radomysl Castle. At the centre of the composition, the artist places the tall tower rising above the surrounding buildings and forming the main vertical accent of the landscape.

The composition is built around the contrast between the warm architecture and the cool blue sky. Orange, ochre, and golden tones of the walls stand out vividly against the blues and whites, creating the impression of a bright sunny day.
The tall tower occupies the central position and gives the entire work a strong upward movement. Its restrained geometry contrasts with the freely painted sky, vegetation, and foreground. As a result, the architectural motif does not feel static but becomes part of a living environment.
Marina Stognieva does not aim for a photographic reproduction of the building. Instead, she conveys it through colour, light, and the character of the brushwork. Windows, wall edges, and roofs are indicated with short expressive strokes, while the sky is painted much more broadly and freely.

The foreground plays a particularly important role in the work. It is painted with broad, energetic strokes of white, green, grey, and dark tones. This textured area creates depth and leads the viewer’s eye towards the architecture of the castle.
On the right, greenery seems to wrap around part of the building, softening its geometry. In this way, the painting brings together two motifs — architecture created by people and nature that is constantly changing the space around it.
The light sky with large white clouds gives the composition a sense of air and openness. Against this background, the warm tower of Radomysl Castle becomes almost a centre of light and immediately attracts the viewer’s attention.
“Radomysl Castle” is part of “Picturesque Guide to Ukraine”, Marina Stognieva’s large-scale author project in which different regions of Ukraine are explored through painting, architecture, nature, travel, and the artist’s personal observations.
In this work, the Zhytomyr region is revealed through architecture with its own character and recognisable silhouette. Warm walls, the tall tower, greenery, and a moving sky come together to create a vivid image of the place — another painterly note about Ukraine.

“I wanted to capture not only the architecture of Radomysl Castle, but also the feeling of the place itself — the warm light on the walls, the height of the tower, the surrounding greenery, and the movement of the sky. These are the details that remain in memory after a journey.”— Marina Stognieva
