The Story Behind the Painting

"Velvet Season" is an original oil painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2019. The artwork is part of the author's cultural and artistic project "Picturesque Guide to Ukraine", a series of paintings introducing viewers to the landscapes, history, traditions and cultural heritage of different regions of Ukraine. This painting belongs to the Crimea section of the project.

The phrase "Velvet Season" refers to one of the most beautiful times of the year on the Black Sea coast. As summer slowly comes to an end, the intense heat gives way to gentle sunshine, the sea remains pleasantly warm, and the beaches become quieter and more peaceful. It is a season of calm, golden light and unforgettable evenings by the sea—an atmosphere beautifully captured in this painting.

The composition opens onto a picturesque Crimean bay surrounded by impressive rocky cliffs. Rich blues and turquoise waters meet the warm golden shoreline, while soft sunlight spreads across the landscape, creating an atmosphere filled with tranquillity and warmth.

Small figures relaxing on the beach bring the scene to life while emphasising the grandeur of the surrounding nature. They enjoy the last warm days of summer, listening to the gentle sound of the waves and quietly appreciating the peaceful rhythm of the Black Sea.
