The Story Behind the Painting

“Sunset in India” is an original painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2020. The work is painted in oil on canvas and measures 35 × 45 cm.

The painting was inspired by the artist’s memories of travelling in India. It captures one of those evening moments when the sun slowly descends toward the horizon, the water reflects the fiery sky, and the silhouettes of palm trees and a small boat transform the real landscape into an almost dreamlike scene.

Light becomes the central character of the work. A large sun hangs above the horizon, while its glowing reflection appears again on the surface of the water, creating a strong vertical axis within the composition. Between these two luminous forms, a dark boat carrying a solitary figure moves across the water — a small human presence within the vast scale of nature.

The intense palette is built from reds, oranges, golds, pinks, and purples. In the upper part of the sky, these warm colours meet deeper blue and greenish strokes, making the evening glow appear even more vivid.

A narrow dark shoreline lined with palm trees separates the sky from the water. The palms are painted almost as silhouettes, allowing them to create rhythm and atmosphere without overwhelming the composition with detail. Their forms immediately evoke the character of a distant tropical landscape.

The detail reveals the lively texture of the oil brushwork. The surface of the water is constructed from horizontal movements of colour, where orange and golden tones merge with pink, violet, and cooler shades. This gives the water a sense of movement while allowing it to remain filled with reflected light.

The small boat becomes an important visual and emotional accent. It emphasises the scale of the surrounding landscape and introduces a human presence into the scene. The figure inside the boat almost dissolves into the water and evening light, leaving an impression of slow movement and quiet contemplation.

Marina Stognieva does not attempt to reproduce a particular Indian landscape with documentary precision. For the artist, it is more important to preserve the feeling of India — the warmth, intensity of colour, tropical nature, slow rhythm of the evening, and the moment when sunlight transforms the entire landscape into a powerful composition of colour.

“Sunset in India” is a painting-memory of travel and of a brief moment that remains in the mind much longer than it lasted in reality. The work brings together the energy of saturated colour and the stillness of an evening landscape, distant exoticism and the artist’s deeply personal experience of what she saw.
