“Teteriv River” – Original Painting by Marina Stognieva

The Story Behind the Painting

“Teteriv River” is an original work by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created as part of the large-scale author project “Picturesque Guide to Ukraine”. The painting is made in oil on paper and measures 21 × 30 cm.

The work is dedicated to the Zhytomyr region and to the image of the Teteriv River, one of the natural motifs associated with this part of Ukraine. Rather than documenting one exact location, the artist focuses on the impression of water, riverbanks, trees, and evening light gradually transforming the landscape.

The composition is built around a broad, calm surface of water reflecting the sky, sunlight, and the silhouettes of the riverbanks. The reflection almost doubles the visual space of the painting and creates a feeling of silence, depth, and the slow movement of an evening landscape.

On the left, the sun descends above the dark line of the distant bank. Warm peach, golden, and creamy tones of the sky contrast with the cooler blue, grey, and green shades of the water. This contrast becomes one of the main emotional accents of the work.

The right side of the composition is occupied by trees and dense riverside vegetation. They are painted with energetic, free brushstrokes in dark green, blue, white, and almost black tones. This gives the bank a lively, moving character, while the water remains calm and restrained.

Reflections play a particularly important role. The sunlight reappears in the water as a soft warm glow, while the dark forms of the opposite bank create an almost symmetrical silhouette below. The real landscape and its reflection seem to flow into one another.

The painting technique remains free and impressionistic. Some areas are created with broad, simplified strokes, while others — especially the trees and grasses in the foreground — have a more active texture. The artist works less with precise detail and more with light, colour, and the overall mood of nature.

“Teteriv River” is part of “Picturesque Guide to Ukraine”, Marina Stognieva’s large-scale author project in which different regions of Ukraine are presented through painting, personal impressions, travel, and the artist’s own observations.

In this work, the Zhytomyr region is expressed through the state of nature — quiet water, dense trees, distant banks, and soft light above the river. It is not only a landscape, but also a visual note about a place and an atmosphere the artist wanted to preserve through painting.
