The Story Behind the Painting

"Adult Alice" is an original oil painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created as a contemporary artistic interpretation of Lewis Carroll's timeless novel "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland."

Rather than illustrating the original story, this artwork imagines Alice many years later. She has grown into a confident young woman, yet somewhere deep inside she still carries the mysterious world she once discovered. Wonderland has never disappeared—it has simply changed together with her.

The familiar characters remain. The Cheshire Cat continues watching with its enigmatic smile, magical mushrooms still grow beneath the twilight sky, and fantasy quietly blends into reality. The painting invites the viewer to step beyond childhood memories and rediscover Wonderland through the eyes of an adult.

Warm skin tones contrast with deep violets, rich blacks and luminous turquoise. The mermaid, oversized mushrooms and symbolic creatures create an atmosphere balanced between dream, memory and imagination. Every element encourages the viewer to invent their own continuation of the story.

Combining symbolism, surrealism and contemporary figurative painting, this artwork explores how childhood dreams evolve instead of disappearing. Sometimes imagination simply learns to speak a different language.

"I often ask myself while painting: 'What if...?' That is exactly how this artwork was born. I imagined Alice as an adult. Who has she become? Is Wonderland still as magical as it used to be? Do the enchanted mushrooms still grow there? Does the Cheshire Cat still smile the same mysterious smile? I discovered the answers to all of these questions directly on the canvas."
