“Autumn Park” – Original Watercolor by Marina Stognieva

The Story Behind the Painting

“Autumn Park” is an original watercolor by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2023. The work is painted in watercolor on 300 g/m² paper, measures 24 × 31 cm, and is presented unframed.

At the centre of the composition are three trees that seem to tell the story of different stages of autumn. The green crowns on both sides frame the vivid central tree filled with orange, red, and ochre tones. Because of this, a simple park motif becomes a small visual story about the changing season.

One of the special qualities of this watercolor is the balance between bright colour and a calm composition. The central tree immediately draws the eye, while the green trees nearby keep the scene visually balanced. The warm yellowish ground beneath the trees unites the composition and creates the feeling of a peaceful autumn day.

The watercolor is painted freely, without excessive detailing. The crowns are built from many transparent and saturated areas of colour layered over one another, creating a lively leafy texture. This freedom of technique allows the artist to convey not individual leaves, but the overall impression of an autumn park.

In the autumn of 2023, “Autumn Park” took part in Marina Stognieva’s personal exhibition in a Kyiv forest. The artist organised this exhibition during the full-scale war — in a natural environment, among real trees and autumn light.

For the artist, this exhibition became a reminder that art continues to live its own life even in difficult times. Watercolors inspired by nature were returned to a natural setting, where they entered into a special dialogue with the real autumn forest.
