The Story Behind the Painting
“Autumn on the Aidar River. Starobilsk Region” is an original oil painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2022. The work is painted in oils on canvas, measures 35 × 50 cm, and is presented unframed on a gallery-wrapped canvas.
The painting depicts the Aidar River in the Starobilsk area — a calm stretch of water flowing between autumn trees. Golden, yellow, orange, and red crowns are reflected in the river, turning the landscape into a play of colour, light, and mirrored forms.
General view of the painting “Autumn on the Aidar River. Starobilsk Region”.
The composition brings together two different autumn moods. The left bank remains more restrained, built with deeper green and ochre tones, while the trees on the right burst into bright yellow, orange, and red. The river unites these two sides of the landscape, gathering their colours into its reflections.
The river itself plays a central role in the painting. It leads the eye deeper into the composition and creates a sense of space, stillness, and slow movement. The reflections of the trees almost double the autumn landscape, making it feel even richer and more immersive.

This work belongs to Marina Stognieva’s large-scale author project “Picturesque Guide to Ukraine” and represents the Luhansk region. Through the project, the artist tells the story of Ukraine’s regions through painting, personal observations, nature, cultural memory, and the stories of places.
For the Luhansk section of the project, this painting preserves the image of the Starobilsk area through the Aidar River — not as an abstract geographical point, but as a specific landscape with its own colour, light, and atmosphere. Such views become part of a living visual memory of Ukraine’s regions.

“In the waters of the Aidar, autumn seems to live a second life. The trees are reflected in the river, the colours blend with the sky and water, and the familiar landscape becomes almost doubled — real and reflected at the same time.”— Marina Stognieva
