The Story Behind the Painting

“Autumn Reflection” is an original painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2023. The work is painted in oils on canvas, measures 75 × 95 cm, and is presented unframed on a gallery-wrapped canvas.

In this work, the autumn landscape seems to divide into two worlds — the real one and its reflection. Bright trees with crimson, orange, golden, and red crowns stand along the dark water, while their mirrored forms continue the composition below and create an almost symmetrical visual space.

The warm crowns of the trees stand out sharply against the dark forest and water. This contrast creates a particular sense of depth: the vivid areas of colour seem to glow from within, while the calm surface of the water repeats them in a softer and more mysterious form.

The painting is less about a specific place and more about a state of nature. Autumn appears here as a moment between light and darkness, warmth and coolness, reality and reflection. The water transforms an ordinary landscape into an almost meditative composition.

The painting was created in Marina Stognieva’s art studio in Kyiv in 2023. A photograph of the work in progress shows the painting before completion, when the balance between light, the dark surface of the water, and the vivid autumn crowns was still taking shape.

The close-up reveals the lively texture of the oil painting especially well. In places, the paint is applied freely and energetically, allowing the tree crowns to be perceived not as individually described leaves, but as moving masses of light and colour.

After completion, the work remained close to the artist in her Kyiv studio. In the photograph taken on the terrace, the painting can already be seen as a finished work — an independent autumn story about colour, the stillness of water, and the changing nature of the season.

The painting is shipped rolled in a protective tube. The canvas is carefully removed from the stretcher bars and packed for safe transportation. After delivery, it can be re-stretched and framed to suit the interior.
