The Story Behind the Painting

“Girl with a Rabbit” is an original painting by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2024. The work is painted in oil on canvas, measures 35 × 45 cm, and is presented unframed.

This painting has a deeply personal meaning for the artist. In the portrait, Marina Stognieva depicted herself at the age of eleven, bringing together in a single image a figure from her own past and a part of her present life.

The white rabbit in the girl’s arms is not an invented character. In 2024, when the painting was created, this rabbit lived with the artist and was part of her everyday life. While Marina worked on the canvas, he would run nearby and, in his own way, seem to inspect the progress of the painting.

In this way, a particular kind of artistic magic appeared in the work: the girl from the past met the rabbit from the present on the same canvas. Two moments in time that could never have existed together in real life became possible through painting.

The dark background focuses attention on the girl’s face and the pale figure of the rabbit. Soft skin tones, warm blonde hair, and light clothing are combined with textured brushstrokes, creating an atmosphere of stillness, intimacy, and inner concentration.

Within the composition, the rabbit becomes more than part of the portrait. It acts as a connection between two different moments in time. Its light figure almost merges with the girl’s clothing, while the hands gently holding the animal strengthen the feeling of trust, tenderness, and protection.

For Marina Stognieva, this work is more than a portrait of a child. Through art, it became a way of looking back at herself across the years and creating an encounter possible only in painting — between the girl she once was and a part of the life she was living in 2024.
