The Story Behind the Painting

“Whisper of Autumn Leaves” is an original watercolor by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2023. The work is painted in watercolor on 300 g/m² paper, measures 24 × 31 cm, and is presented unframed.

The main characters of this work are autumn leaves — delicate, already touched by the changing season, yet still filled with colour. Warm golden, orange, and reddish tones stand out vividly against the cool blue-violet watercolor background.

There is no complicated narrative in the composition — only a branch with leaves. Yet this simplicity allows the viewer to focus on the beauty of shape, colour, and natural rhythm. Each leaf has its own character: one is lighter and almost golden, another glows with deeper orange, while another still carries traces of green and cooler outlines.

The watercolor technique emphasizes the fragility of the autumn motif. Transparent washes are combined with more expressive veins and contours, while light splashes and patches of colour in the background create a sense of air, movement, and a quiet autumn melody.

In autumn 2023, “Whisper of Autumn Leaves” took part in Marina Stognieva’s personal exhibition in a Kyiv forest. The artist organised this exhibition during the full-scale war — in a natural setting, among real trees, fallen leaves, and autumn light.

For the artist, this exhibition became a reminder that art continues to live its own life even in difficult times. In the case of “Whisper of Autumn Leaves”, this idea felt especially natural: leaves painted in watercolor were placed among the real autumn forest, almost as if returning to their original source.
