The Story Behind the Painting

“Trembita. Call of the Carpathians” is an original work by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2026. The painting is made in oil on 300 g/m² paper and measures 21 × 30 cm.

At the centre of the composition is a trembita player surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains. His figure becomes part of the vast mountain landscape, while the trembita itself turns into a symbolic voice of the scenery. Its long, resonant sound seems to travel through valleys and slopes, connecting the human presence with nature and the memory of the Carpathians.

General view of “Trembita. Call of the Carpathians”.

In this work, the sense of space is as important as the subject itself. Mountain ridges unfold one behind another, creating depth, while the human figure emphasises the scale of the Carpathians. The trembita is directed into the distance, as if its sound continues far beyond the borders of the painting.

Oil painting on paper allows soft transitions of mountain air to coexist with more expressive, lively brushwork in the foreground. This gives the landscape a sense of lightness while preserving the richness of colour and painterly texture.

The photograph of the creative process shows how the composition gradually developed — from the overall rhythm of the mountains and sky to the figure of the trembita player, who becomes the emotional centre of the work. The contrast between the vast landscape and the relatively small human figure creates a sense of dialogue between a person and the Carpathian Mountains.

“Trembita. Call of the Carpathians” is part of Marina Stognieva’s large-scale author project “Picturesque Guide to Ukraine” and was created for the section dedicated to Zakarpattia. Through this project, the artist tells the story of Ukraine’s regions through painting, combining landscapes, characteristic images, cultural associations, and personal impressions.

In this painting, the trembita becomes more than a traditional musical instrument — it becomes an image of a call. A call of the mountains, memory, open space, and the special inner silence that can be felt high in the Carpathians.

“In this work, I wanted the trembita to sound not only as a musical instrument, but as the voice of the Carpathians themselves. Its call travels through the mountains and open space, connecting a person with nature, memory, and the feeling of home.”
— Marina Stognieva
