The Story Behind the Artwork

“Nude Man in an Armchair” is an original charcoal drawing by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in 2022 on paper. Drawn from life, the work captures not only the physical presence of the male body, but also the personality of the model — calm, strong, and fully aware of the viewer’s gaze.

The man sits nude in an armchair in a relaxed, natural pose. There is no theatricality and no attempt to present an idealised body. This sense of ease gives the image its immediacy: the viewer encounters not an abstract symbol of masculinity, but a real person with his own physicality, mood, and inner presence.

In the male nude, the artist is interested not simply in anatomy, but in the coexistence of strength and vulnerability. Without clothing, social roles, status, and external signs disappear. What remains is the person himself — posture, gaze, gesture, body, and the unmistakable feeling of human presence.

The dark charcoal marks give the figure weight and volume. Quick, sometimes sharp strokes define the shoulders, chest, arms, and legs, while softer areas of shading create depth and the surrounding space. This combination preserves the immediacy of drawing from life while giving the composition a strong graphic character.

Particular attention is drawn to the man’s face. His expression is calm, yet there is a sense of inner confidence and even a subtle challenge in his gaze. He is not a passive model simply allowing himself to be observed; he seems conscious of being seen and, in a way, returns the gaze of both artist and viewer.

Nudity in this work is not intended as provocation. It becomes a way of speaking about the naturalness of the human body and about the many forms that beauty, strength, physical presence, and character can take. The male body is presented without embellishment — living, strong, individual, and real.
