The Story Behind the Artwork

“Handsome Guy with a Kind Heart” is an original drawing by Ukrainian artist Marina Stognieva, created in Kyiv in 2022. The male nude is rendered on paper with confident graphic lines, soft shading, and the immediacy of direct observation of the human body.

The title sounds almost playful. The viewer is presented with a nude young man with a strong, expressive physique, yet the artist seems to invite us to look beyond the obvious and notice the person first. A handsome guy — but, most importantly, one with a kind heart. That gentle irony gives the work much of its character.

The male figure occupies almost the entire sheet. Broad shoulders, chest, arms, and torso are defined with confident marks, yet the artist does not turn the body into an academic diagram. The drawing retains a sense of natural imperfection, physical presence, and the individuality of a particular person observed at a particular moment.

The nudity is direct and natural. The body is neither hidden nor idealised, and because of this it gradually becomes more than simply the subject of attention. Behind the physical form, a personality begins to emerge — a calm expression, a certain thoughtfulness, and an inward sense of concentration.

This is where the small game between title and image begins. A viewer’s first reaction may naturally focus on the naked body, but the title deliberately shifts the emphasis: what if the most important thing about this person is not what is immediately visible? Perhaps true attractiveness begins where appearance meets character, warmth, and humanity.

The drawing remains lively and expressive. Dense shading gives volume to the chest and arms, finer lines model the abdomen and face, while unfinished edges preserve the feeling of a spontaneous study from life. The visible movement of the artist’s hand becomes part of the composition itself.

For centuries, the male body in art has often represented strength, heroism, and physical perfection. In this work, Marina Stognieva keeps the strength but removes the heroic pose. What remains is simply a young man — nude, attractive, slightly introspective, and recognisably human.
